Growing up in Asu, a small village in Satara, Pravin belonged to a farmers family which had to migrate for earn livelihood to Pimpri-Chinchwad in search of better opportunities. Years later, that same boy, Pravin Nikam, would study at London School of Economics (LSE) and dedicate his life to ensuring that marginalized students never miss out on education due to financial, legal, or social barriers. In a conversation with ImpactStories.in, Pravin shares how his journey—from selling newspapers to mentoring students from low-income and marginalised communities—shaped the vision behind ROSHINI and its mission to transform lives.

From an Engineer’s dream to an Activist’s mission

"Like most kids in my colony, I believed I had only two career choices—engineering or medicine" Pravin shares. Growing up in a community of migrant workers from Solapur and Satara, where his father worked in a factory and his mother sold homemade meals, financial stability was the ultimate goal. Higher education meant escaping poverty, securing a job, and supporting the family.

Following the expected path, Pravin enrolled in engineering. But in his first year, his father’s factory faced a financial crisis, and salaries were delayed for months. Knowing he couldn’t burden his parents with tuition fees, he started selling newspapers, but the earnings were barely enough. Around the same time, a study trip to Assam introduced him to Roshini, a young girl forced to drop out of school after her first period due to deep-rooted taboos.

"That moment shattered my idea of education" Pravin recalls. "For me, education was about career security. But for many, especially marginalized students, it’s not even an option because of societal barriers."

He made a bold decision then—he would leave engineering to pursue political science and dedicate himself to social change.

Building a movement: From street plays to Roshini NGO

At SP College, Pune, Pravin formed a street play group named Roshini—after the girl who had inspired him. The group used theater to raise awareness about gender inequality, education access, and youth empowerment. What started as a small collective soon became a powerful student movement.

"We all came from rural and semi-rural backgrounds. We didn't speak polished Marathi or English. We didn't fit into elite college spaces. So, we created our own space" he explains. The street plays caught attention, bringing together students from tier-2 and tier-3 cities who lacked access to academic and career opportunities.

Realizing that awareness alone wasn’t enough, Pravin and his peers began mentoring students who faced financial and social hurdles in accessing higher education. They helped students prepare for college applications, entrance exams, and career decisions—offering guidance that many of them never had.

Pravin’s activism led him to Nehru Kendra Sangathan (NYKS), where he worked as a National Youth Volunteer, conducting workshops on education awareness, gender issues, and youth development across rural India. His exposure to underserved communities further cemented his belief—education wasn’t just about degrees, it was about breaking cycles of marginalization.

Beyond education: Tackling legal and financial barriers

In 2016, Pravin expanded Roshini NGO’s focus beyond mentorship. He realized that even talented students from marginalized backgrounds were unable to access education due to missing legal documents.

"Many students didn’t have caste certificates, income proof, or disability IDs. Without these, they couldn’t apply for scholarships or access government education schemes" Pravin explains. "A child without documents is invisible to the system. Our job is to make sure they are seen and given the opportunities they deserve" he emphasizes.

The organization began assisting students with legal documentation, ensuring they could claim their rightful benefits. Over time, three core pillars emerged in Roshini NGO’s work:

1. Mentoring & Coaching – Free guidance to help students prepare for entrance exams and university applications.

2. Legal Documentation Support – Assisting students from tribal, transgender, and marginalized communities in obtaining necessary IDs and certificates.

3. Scholarship Access – Mapping students to government and private scholarships, ensuring financial support for tuition, accommodation, and coaching.

Making it to top universities: Proving it’s possible

Pravin’s work took on new meaning when, in 2020, he himself won the Chevening Scholarship and pursued a Master’s in Human Rights and Politics at LSE (London School of Economics).

"I always dreamed of clicking a photo next to Dr. Ambedkar’s bust at LSE. When I finally did, I realized—if I can make it, so can others" he says.

Since then, ROSHINI has mentored multiple students for higher education opportunities and also they have secured fully funded scholarships at universities like Oxford, LSE, Ashoka, and Azim Premji University. These scholarships aren’t just numbers—a fully funded scholarship to LSE is worth ₹40-45 lakh, while a Young India Fellowship at Ashoka University costs around ₹30 lakh. For students from low-income and marginalised communities, these opportunities are life-changing.

The organization now operates six community centers and partners with local groups in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, expanding mentorship access beyond metro cities.

Overcoming financial challenges: IIM incubation and future goals

ROSHINI is building a scholarship program to financially support the education of students from marginalised communities and is looking for philanthropic partners.

In 2023, the NGO received a major boost when it was incubated by IIM Bangalore, providing financial support and strategic mentorship. This incubation has helped them sustain operations, but the road ahead remains difficult.

"We need to build a strong scholarship program coupled with a mentoring program to assist students from marginalized communities " Pravin explains. The long-term vision? A dedicated academic institute that serves as a gateway for students from marginalsed communities into higher education and the social impact sector.

"We don’t just want to get students into college. We want to equip them with the skills to thrive there" he adds.

Growing up in the bustling neighborhoods of Triplicane, Chennai, young S.K. Thanigaivelan was no stranger to the constraints of urban life. "There were hardly any playgrounds—just congested spaces. The first time I saw a proper ground was at my school, Hindu High Secondary School, at the age of 11. It was a basketball court, and for me, it felt enormous," he recalls. This seemingly mundane encounter with a basketball court marked the beginning of a journey that would eventually turn a passion for sports into a vehicle for social change.

Today, Thanigaivelan is the founder of Victory Sports Foundation (VSF), an NGO dedicated to ensuring “every child deserves to play.” Since its inception in 2004, the organization has transformed neglected playgrounds into buzzing sports hubs, trained hundreds of students in rural and urban communities, and propelled several to prestigious opportunities, both nationally and internationally. But the path leading here was anything but straightforward.

From Athlete to Changemaker

Thanigaivelan’s early years were marked by determination as well as setbacks. His talent on the basketball court earned him a spot in the district and state-level teams, but success came only after he spent years as a bench player, fighting for his moment. By the time he reached college, he had discovered a new love—boxing—and was training rigorously for competitions when an unfortunate nose fracture derailed his aspirations. Yet, this injury planted the seed for something bigger.

"While recovering, I decided to focus on coaching," he explains. Using his free time, he began training five young boys from a nearby fisherman community, free of cost. These weren’t just boxing lessons—they were moments of mentorship, discipline, and hope for children who might otherwise have fallen through the cracks. Around the same time, Thanigaivelan also pursued a Master’s in Social Work (MSW), learning how to use sports as a medium to engage and uplift communities.

This passion eventually materialized into Victory Sports Foundation. "When I started, I joined a local school run by an NGO as a value education teacher and noticed that students there were playing football with makeshift balls. It broke my heart. So I gathered some old footballs and began coaching them," he shares. The results? Students became disciplined, focused, and engaged. Realizing the transformative potential of sports, Thanigaivelan formally registered his NGO and began expanding his vision.

A simple motto and a transformative Model

Under the motto “Every child deserves to play,” VSF developed a unique three-pillar model:

Ground Rehabilitation: VSF identifies unused or neglected spaces—often used as dump yards—and turns them into functional playgrounds. One such success story is a football field near Marina Beach, where Thanigaivelan and his team repurposed a bare, underutilized ground into an energetic space for local schoolchildren. "Attendance and morale in the school improved dramatically once the ground came to life," he notes.

Skill Development: Training went beyond the physical. While students gained proficiency in sports such as football, basketball, boxing, and athletics, they also learned critical life skills like handling pressure, overcoming fear, and managing failure.

Opportunities: From district-level tournaments to state and national championships, VSF ensures students have exposure to competitive events. Some even went further than Thanigaivelan could have dreamed.

To date, three students trained by VSF have represented India at international tournaments, while 25 others secured stable jobs in the railways, police forces, and as physical education teachers. Perhaps more extraordinary is the life turnaround for school dropouts who, through sports, were motivated to complete their education—with several going on to obtain postgraduate degrees.

Beyond the Field

Thanigaivelan’s work didn’t stop at the sports boundary lines. During testing times such as the Chennai floods and the COVID-19 pandemic, Victory Sports Foundation extended its reach beyond sports. The organization provided critical relief to families in need, supporting over 30,000 households during the pandemic alone.

"If we’re teaching teamwork and resilience on the field, we also need to show it during crises," he shares with conviction. The NGO also actively engages in tree plantations and other environmental activities as part of its broader community support initiatives.

To put this impact into perspective, Thanigaivelan emphasizes a key point: “Sports isn’t just about winning. It’s about creating individuals who can win in life.” And indeed, his organization embodies this philosophy—working tirelessly to build stronger, happier, and more confident communities.

Challenges that became Stepping Stones

The road to impact wasn’t without its obstacles. Access to resources—be it land, equipment, or funding—was a persistent challenge, especially in the beginning. "At one point, we were collecting used footballs and basketballs just to provide something for the kids," he recalls. Convincing parents to allow their children to prioritize sports was another uphill battle.

Yet, these limitations never deterred Thanigaivelan. "When you connect with the parents and show them how discipline and focus from sports positively affect their child’s behavior, their perspectives slowly begin to change," he adds. Support from volunteers like Vinod Balan, who began as a social media manager and eventually became involved in event coordination and life skills coaching, further energized the NGO.

However, Thanigaivelan is quick to credit the children themselves for inspiring him to keep going. “When you see a child, once shy and unsure, stand with confidence on the field or graduate after years of struggle—it’s worth every hurdle.”

Recognition and the Road Ahead

Tireless commitment often garners attention, and the Victory Sports Foundation is no exception. In 2012, the Government of India recognized Thanigaivelan as a grassroots changemaker in sports, one of only 12 individuals to receive such an honor. His story has also been documented in Incredible Champions by Sandra Shagger, a book detailing his transformative journey and the challenges he overcame.

Yet, for Thanigaivelan, these accolades are not the end goal. "Recognition is humbling, but there’s so much more to do," he says. Among his aspirations is the establishment of a dedicated sports school in Tamil Nadu, combining academics with athletic training. He’s also planning a six-month continuous sports league to ensure his students get regular exposure to competitive environments. Nutrition, often overlooked in grassroots sports programs, is another area of focus through their “Nutrition for All” campaign.

Joining the Movement

The work of Victory Sports Foundation is far from a solo effort. Thanigaivelan is actively encouraging individuals to join hands with the initiative. "You don’t need to be a sportsperson to contribute. We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds—photographers, writers, app developers, event organizers—anyone who can help us make an impact," he shares enthusiastically.

For example, one volunteer began by simply creating English-language proposals for potential donors but quickly found himself deeply involved in event management and coaching activities. It’s a reminder that skills of all kinds can find purpose in grassroots movements.

In Thane, Maharashtra, RNisarg Foundation is changing how communities manage waste and health. In a conversation with ImpactStories.in, Dr. Lata Ghanshamnani shares her journey, the challenges faced, and how her foundation empowers schools, women, and households to create lasting impact.

When ImpactStories.in spoke with Dr. Lata Ghanshamnani, her commitment to creating livable cities was immediately evident. A practicing ophthalmologist in Thane for 25 years, Dr. Lata’s journey into waste management began with an awakening moment in her 40s.

“I realized that I couldn’t just focus on my family and profession anymore. If I wanted my city to be livable for my children, I had to act,” she shares.

The spark came from a simple act of segregating household waste. “I believed segregation alone was enough,” she says. “But I soon discovered that most of the waste, even if segregated, was being dumped into landfills. There was no system in place to handle it properly.”

This discovery lit a fire in Dr. Lata. “You can’t unsee a problem once you’re aware of it,” she reflects. Determined to make a difference, she began her journey as an advocate for waste management and civic responsibility.

Building the foundation for change

In 2016, Dr. Lata established RNisarg Foundation with the mission to address civic challenges through innovative, community-led solutions. The journey wasn’t easy. As she candidly admits, “Doctors aren’t trained for nonprofit work. We know medicine, not waste segregation or public advocacy.”

She describes the early days of the foundation as a steep learning curve. “I had to learn everything—how to communicate with local government officials, how to educate communities, and even how to manage funds. It was overwhelming, but I believed in the cause,” she recalls.

Her first major initiative focused on working with schools. Through the Zero Waste Schools program, RNisarg Foundation began educating students on segregation, composting, and recycling. “Children are the best ambassadors for change,” Dr. Lata says with a smile. “They bring these lessons home and influence their families.”

Since its launch, the program has reached over 40,000 students and helped more than 50 schools significantly reduce their waste. Each school now diverts between 1 and 2 tons of waste annually from landfills, proving the power of grassroots action.

Tackling menstrual waste head-on

Another critical issue Dr. Lata identified early on was menstrual waste. “Most people don’t realize that sanitary napkins contain plastic and chemicals that take centuries to decompose. One woman can generate thousands of pads as waste in her lifetime,” she explains.

To combat this, RNisarg Foundation began promoting menstrual cups, a reusable alternative that can last up to seven years. The initiative started in tribal areas, where adoption rates were as high as 100%. “In rural and tribal communities, women were surprisingly open to making the switch once they understood the benefits. It was in urban areas, among the privileged, that we faced more resistance,” Dr. Lata notes.

The foundation’s efforts have empowered over 25,000 women to adopt menstrual cups, eliminating millions of sanitary pads annually from waste streams. Additionally, the project has trained 2,000 community educators to spread awareness.

One success story that stands out to Dr. Lata is that of Meera, an Asha worker in a remote village in Maharashtra. “Meera was hesitant at first, but she became one of our most vocal advocates. Today, she has trained over 500 women in her village to switch to menstrual cups,” Dr. Lata proudly shares.

Cleaning up pharmaceutical waste

In a city like Thane, pharmaceutical waste presents another significant challenge. Medicines, in all forms - tablets, syrups, ointments either expired,damaged or unwanted often find their way into landfills, polluting soil and water.

To address this, RNisarg Foundation launched the Green Pharmacy project, installing dedicated bins for households to safely dispose of unused or expired medicines. Over the last three years, the initiative has collected more than 2,000 kilograms of pharmaceutical waste from 10,000 families.

“People don’t think twice about throwing pills or syringes in the trash, but these substances are incredibly toxic. It’s a hidden problem that we’re trying to bring to light,” Dr. Lata says.

Inspiring sustainable lifestyles

Beyond waste management, Dr. Lata advocates for lifestyle changes that have far-reaching benefits. One of her key initiatives promotes a shift to plant-based diets. “Your food choices don’t just impact your health—they have a massive environmental footprint,” she explains.

Citing studies that link animal agriculture to deforestation and climate change, she urges individuals to consider the broader implications of their meals. “If there’s one change anyone can make today that will have the greatest impact, it’s moving toward a plant-based diet,” she emphasizes. “Your food choices have a massive impact on the environment. Despite the foundation’s many successes, Dr. Lata remains candid about the challenges. “The scale of the problem is immense, and we’re doing too little, too late. Climate change isn’t waiting for us to catch up,” she says.

However, she is optimistic about the power of collective action. “Everyone can contribute in their own way. You don’t have to start an NGO—you just need to start at home. Segregate your waste, use sustainable products, and inspire those around you,” she advises.

Dr. Lata’s work with RNisarg Foundation has not gone unnoticed. From the Governor’s Award to a Swachh Bharat fellowship, the recognition has helped amplify her message. But for her, the true reward lies in the impact. “Seeing a community transform its habits, or a child teaching their parents about segregation, is what keeps me going,” she says.

A legacy of change

As she reflects on her journey, Dr. Lata leaves readers with a powerful thought: “We often think someone else will solve the problem, but change starts with us. Small steps can lead to big transformations.”

In the 1980s and 90s, Deep Jyoti Sonu Brahma grew up in Assam, a time when the state was experiencing significant social and political upheaval. The frequent strikes and agitations often brought daily life to a halt, and Sonu noticed how economic challenges drove young people to leave Assam, seeking stability and opportunity outside the state. Rural communities, despite fertile land and rich agricultural heritage, saw minimal support and faced a shift toward unsustainable farming practices. Agriculture was undervalued, often seen as a last resort.

A defining moment came when Sonu observed the disconnect between the younger generation and their agricultural roots, realizing that a change in perception and opportunity could turn agriculture into a meaningful pursuit. Inspired to address the root causes, Sonu launched Farm2Food, an initiative designed to transform Assam’s agricultural landscape by creating opportunities that engage youth through school-based nutrition gardens, entrepreneurship training, and community involvement.

Farm2Food now drives local youth to see agriculture as a viable and rewarding path, blending education, sustainability, and economic empowerment, and believes that youth leadership in the revival of sustainable food systems is one of the major ways to fight climate change.

In rural Assam, Farm2Food Foundation has been leading a quiet revolution, reshaping agriculture and inspiring young minds to view farming as a path of opportunity, sustainability, and community pride. Through this journey, ImpactStories.in speaks with Deepjyoti Sonu, founder of Farm2Food Foundation, who shares how the organization has mobilized schools, villages, and families to bring a renewed sense of pride and purpose to local agriculture. Below, Deepjyoti explains the motivation, impact, and future of Farm2Food in a conversation with ImpactStories.in.

Growing up amid Assam's social challenges

"In the 80s and 90s, Assam was like a world of its own,” Deepjyoti recalls, sitting in a small community hall as young children play nearby. "We grew up in a time of unrest. Strikes were common, and businesses would close often. Entire communities faced economic instability, and that led to high migration among young people.” As the son of a farmer in a rural village, Deepjyoti experienced this first-hand, watching young people leave their hometowns in search of opportunities that seemed forever out of reach in Assam.

Despite the fertile land and a rich agricultural heritage, Deepjyoti observed that farming was undervalued and often seen as a ‘last resort’ profession. Large corporations had begun investing in local lands, further discouraging small farmers who felt overwhelmed and outcompeted. "We could see the wealth of our land, but it was slipping through our hands," Deepjyoti tells ImpactStories.in. "Agriculture became more about survival than pride, and that affected how the youth saw it—something to escape from, not embrace.”

This experience led to the seed of Farm2Food, an organization Deepjyoti Brahma and his co founder would later establish to create a renewed culture around agriculture. With support from like-minded individuals, the organization’s vision took shape around transforming agriculture into a respected, sustainable, and financially viable pursuit.

Planting the first seeds: transforming schools into gardens

When Farm2Food first started, Deepjyoti’s goal was simple yet ambitious—create a link between local youth and agriculture. The organization introduced its flagship initiative, the School Nutrition Garden Program, where students grow vegetables on school grounds. The gardens serve a dual purpose, providing nutrition for the school’s midday meal program and hands-on agricultural learning.

"School gardens were a game-changer," Deepjyoti explains, gesturing toward the rows of vibrant plants behind him. "We saw how children connected with these gardens—they learned about the land, saw their hard work turn into real produce, and understood that farming wasn’t just an occupation. It was a way to support their community and themselves.”

In these gardens, students from grades six through eight learned everything from soil preparation to harvesting, with each task connected to their science and math curriculum. "For instance," Deepjyoti explains, "they’d use perimeter formulas for fencing, learn area calculations for plot layout, and understand the life cycle of plants. The garden became a living lab where they could see and feel the results of their work."

Through such initiatives, Farm2Food has connected with over 1,000 schools, engaging around 120,000 students directly. "It’s incredible to see the pride in the students’ faces when they harvest their first vegetables," Deepjyoti says with a smile. "Many of them never imagined they could earn from the land, and now they’re discovering the potential right in their own villages."

Reviving Assam’s agricultural pride

Beyond the students, Farm2Food engages entire communities, knowing well that the ecosystem surrounding the child has an enormous influence. The organization has trained over 150 women in organic farming practices, enabling them to take on roles as farming consultants and livestock caretakers. "These women are more than just farmers," Deepjyoti points out. "They’re mentors, and their success stories inspire others."

For many rural households, livestock serves as a "back-pocket ATM," a resource that can be easily sold in times of need. To protect this income source, Farm2Food teaches local women skills such as vaccination and animal care. "It’s amazing to see how quickly they pick up techniques and then go on to help others in the community,” Deepjyoti says. "A single trained woman can support her family and uplift her neighbors too."

By forming two Farmers Producers Organizations (FPOs), Farm2Food has also created structured opportunities for community members to market their produce and livestock. In fact, the FPOs now produce not only vegetables but also sell sustainable products like goat manure and biodegradable Arecanut leaf plates, offering an alternative to plastic. "The FPOs were a big step," Deepjyoti remarks. "It showed the community that they didn’t need to rely on big corporations to succeed."

In addition to income generation, Farm2Food has also revived the practice of homestead gardening, which had been in decline for decades. "Our communities have seen around a 15-20% revival of homestead gardens, which is just the beginning," Deepjyoti says, proudly. "It’s not an overnight transformation, but a slow and steady return to self-sufficiency."

The impact of influence: turning students into entrepreneurs

One of the most surprising effects of Farm2Food’s work has been the entrepreneurial spirit that it instills in children as young as 13. "When students start seeing a return on their effort, it lights a fire in them," Deepjyoti explains. "Some students earn a small amount from the garden, which plants the idea that they can earn more if they continue learning and growing. For a young girl who makes 10 rupees from her garden, that’s not just money—it’s a step toward her independence."

For many students, these small successes lead to bigger conversations about entrepreneurship. In partnership with their teachers and parents, students are encouraged to sell their produce, using profits to reinvest in seeds or other supplies. "We teach them that you don’t need to be a millionaire to be an entrepreneur. Managing resources well is the real skill," Deepjyoti explains.

Beyond growing vegetables, the students also create their own bio-enhancers and vermicompost, selling these eco-friendly products within their communities. The profits may be small, but the impact is significant.

Recognizing change: awards and recognition

The ripple effects of Farm2Food’s work haven’t gone unnoticed. In 2015, Deepjyoti received the prestigious Ashoka Fellowship, a testament to his dedication to social change. "Receiving the Ashoka Fellowship validated the work we’ve been doing. It reminded us that others also see the importance of agriculture in building a sustainable future," he says.

Farm2Food has also received recognition at various levels, including the Northeast Impact Award 2016 and the Outlook Nutrition Award in 2019, The Glenmark Nutrition Award 2022. "Awards are wonderful, but what matters most is the change we’re seeing in the young people and their families. That’s the true reward," Deepjyoti emphasizes.

Facing challenges and evolving mindsets

While Farm2Food has made great strides, the journey hasn’t been without challenges. "One of our biggest struggles is communicating our impact," Deepjyoti admits. "Funders often want measurable outcomes—numbers, produce volumes, etc.—but how do you measure a young girl’s newfound confidence in growing her own food or a mother’s shift toward sustainable practices?"

Convincing funders that agriculture is worth investing in remains an ongoing challenge. Many funders, Deepjyoti explains, look for quantifiable "quick wins" rather than the slower, systemic changes Farm2Food aims for. "We want to create long-lasting change, but that doesn’t happen overnight,” Deepjyoti says. "A community needs time to trust the process, to let go of old mindsets, and to adopt new ones."

As Deepjyoti gradually steps back from executive duties, passing leadership to younger team members like Sagarika Devi and Partha Pratim Bordoloi, the organization faces another pivotal moment. "Letting go is difficult," he admits. "But for Farm2Food to thrive, it must grow beyond any one person. That’s what I hope to achieve—a self-sustaining ecosystem that will flourish long after I’m gone."

A hopeful harvest: sowing the seeds of a lasting legacy

As Deepjyoti wraps up his conversation with ImpactStories.in, he reflects on the future he envisions for Farm2Food. “Our goal is simple: to make young people see agriculture as an avenue of opportunity and a source of pride,” he says. "We want them to grow up with respect for the land, to see farming as a viable career or even just a life skill they can always come back to."

A pivotal moment arrived when Geeta met Prashant, a bright but disadvantaged student who had scored over 90% on his 10th-grade exams. Prashant’s perseverance, despite having no electricity or stable support at home, was a humbling experience for Geeta, inspiring her to found Vidyadaan Sahayyak Mandal (VSM) in 2008. Through VSM, Geeta began connecting rural students with education, mentorship, and career guidance—helping over 800 students across Maharashtra access new paths in life and equipping them to realize dreams once deemed impossible.

An unexpected start to a lifelong mission

Geeta Shah’s journey toward founding Vidyadaan Sahayyak Mandal (VSM) began not with an intention to establish an organization but with a deeply felt desire to make a difference in the lives of underprivileged children. Twenty years ago, while Geeta was working in the corporate sector, she volunteered with SOSVA Society for Service to Voluntary Agencies, teaching daycare children of construction workers on weekends. Over three years, she taught these young children basic hygiene, literacy, and social skills. Seeing how these children spent more time with her than with their parents, she realized the profound impact that mentorship and consistent guidance could have on their lives.

“This daycare experience made me realize the transformative power of mentorship,” Geeta reflects. “It showed me that for many children, teachers are their primary mentors, shaping their view of the world.” The experience sparked her vision to provide more children with such formative guidance, an early seed for what would eventually become VSM.

Meeting Prashant: The turning point

Geeta’s path to creating VSM became clear when she met Prashant. One Saturday, she came across a newspaper article about Prashant, a bright but underprivileged student from Shahapur who had scored 92.3% on his 10th-grade exams, ranking first in his entire area. His family lived below the poverty line, and, remarkably, he wasn’t even aware of his achievement until someone suggested he check his scores. This story highlighted for Geeta the deep level of educational disconnect in rural areas—a promising student like Prashant had neither resources nor guidance to support his future.

Compelled by his story, Geeta visited Prashant and his family, witnessing firsthand their difficult living conditions. “When I asked him what kind of support he needed, he didn’t ask for money. He simply asked if I could stay by his side until he became an engineer,” she recounts.

“I went there thinking I would be the one helping, but I came back richer for having known him,” she reflects. His determination and modesty left a lasting impact on her, igniting her commitment to create a system of mentorship and support for rural students.

With Geeta’s mentorship, Prashant went on to excel in his studies, securing admission in one of the top government engineering colleges. He completed his degree with impressive scores and earned a place at a leading multinational company in Pune. Sadly, Prashant’s life was cut short in a tragic accident. While riding his bicycle home from work, he was struck by a vehicle on the wrong side of the road. Having registered as an organ donor, Prashant’s organs were donated, giving new life to others. For Geeta, his spirit remains alive, inspiring her work to this day.

Laying the foundation

In the early days, Geeta worked closely with three students—Prashant, Anil, and Arati —who stayed at her home for a year. “I wanted to understand their daily challenges on a personal level before venturing out to help more underprivileged children,” she explains. Observing the unique obstacles each of them faced provided Geeta with a solid foundation for VSM, shaping the organization’s approach to mentorship, guidance, and support.

These initial experiences with Prashant, Anil, and Arati taught Geeta how impactful personalized mentorship could be. They solidified her resolve to expand her support to many more students across Maharashtra, giving rise to Vidyadaan Sahayyak Mandal.

Building a foundation in the social sector

From 2004 to 2008, Geeta dedicated herself to understanding the social sector and learning from established organizations. She visited several well-regarded NGOs to study their approaches, operations, and impacts. Among these were Maharogi Seva Samittee, Warora, working towards the betterment of stigmatized and marginalized people and Snehalaya, a respected NGO with effective administration, and notable figures in social work, including Anna Hazare, whose activism had transformed communities at the grassroots level. She also spent time in villages to observe transformative local efforts and visited old age homes to gain insights into managing community-focused initiatives.

“These experiences taught me what a strong NGO foundation requires—transparent procedures, disciplined operations, and above all, accountability to both donors and beneficiaries,” Geeta reflects. Through her visits, she learned the importance of maintaining transparent financial practices, ensuring that every donation was accounted for so that donors could trust in the organization’s integrity.

In this journey, Geeta was guided throughout by co-founder Bhau Nanivadekar, an experienced social worker from a family of freedom fighters. Bhau brought with him knowledge of process-oriented social work and instilled in the team a vision & disciplined approach. “Bhau helped us understand how to remain committed to the mission while adhering to best practices,” Geeta explains. His background in social initiatives provided invaluable guidance as they established the framework for Vidyadaan Sahayyak Mandal.

Founding Vidyadaan Sahayyak Mandal

Starting with just eight students and a 25,000 INR budget, VSM was born out of Geeta’s drive to support students through mentorship as well as financial assistance. The organization’s initial operations were supported by few like minded people who believed in her mission to support rural students across Maharashtra.

Today, VSM has scaled to cover all 36 districts of Maharashtra through six regional centers, supporting over 800 students and maintaining a strong alumni network of 900+. A team of 550 mentors, primarily volunteers, serves as the backbone of VSM’s work. Mentorship at VSM, Geeta emphasizes, is structured and goal-oriented, with students setting objectives in Academics, Learning, Personality development, and Social engagement through VSM’s ALPS model.

Guided by the belief “Education is not preparation for life; Education is life itself”, Geeta has instilled this principle deeply within VSM’s culture, underscoring the organization’s commitment to lifelong growth, character-building, and community engagement. “Our mentorship program is about more than academic success. We’re also guiding them to become responsible, socially aware citizens,” Geeta explains.

Mentorship beyond academics

Through VSM, Geeta established a comprehensive mentorship model that emphasizes personal growth as much as academic achievement. “Mentorship isn’t limited to 18 months or two years here,” she says. “We mentor students until they complete their education, sometimes even when they are alumni.”

Each student in VSM begins with a detailed goal-setting exercise, focusing on their ALPS model objectives for academics, learning, personality, and social growth. Career teams and Mentors work closely with the students to meet these goals. As a result, VSM’s success rate is exceptional, with 97% of students finding employment after graduation.

In addition to one-on-one mentorship, VSM organizes group mentoring sessions, including monthly meetings where students learn critical skills like time management, public speaking, and teamwork. “During these sessions, we encourage students to share their journeys and challenges,” Geeta says. “They draw strength from one another and build a network of support that’s invaluable.”

Career-specific mentoring teams

One of VSM’s unique features is its specialized career teams, where career teams guide students based on their chosen paths. “We have 17 career-specific teams covering fields like engineering, medicine, science, nursing, visual arts,law,etc.” Geeta says. This setup allows students to receive targeted advice from career teams with industry experience, who also support them in building resumes, preparing for aptitude, entrance exams, and refining interview skills.

The career teams often provide insights into niche fields, guiding students who may be the first in their family or village to pursue such careers. Geeta recounts the example of nursing students in VSM who stayed at the frontlines during COVID, inspired by VSM’s commitment to social responsibility. “Despite their families calling them home, our nursing students stayed on duty,” she shares. “That dedication is the real impact of our mentorship.”

Geeta also highlights VSM’s alumni base, who, having experienced the benefits of mentorship, often return to volunteer as mentors themselves. Alumni assist with activities like verifying new students’ backgrounds through home visits, conducting college outreach, and facilitating workshops.

The challenge of sustaining impact

Despite its reach, VSM faces ongoing challenges, particularly in securing funds. The organization’s annual budget is funded through a combination of CSR funds (40-50%), individual donors (30%), crowd funding and the dedicated donor program, which allows donors to sponsor a student’s education from start to finish.

“Funding is a constant challenge,” Geeta acknowledges. “We rely heavily on the goodwill of individual donors, and while we’re grateful for our CSR partnerships, resources are often stretched thin.”

Another significant challenge is finding skilled mentors who can commit their time and expertise. “We’re constantly on the lookout for people with the right skills,” Geeta explains. “VSM is a volunteer-driven organization, and finding individuals who are willing to mentor or lead projects is critical for us.”

Expanding VSM’s reach and focus on vocational skills

With a vision of “Empowered Student, Empowered Nation” Geeta Shah is committed to extending VSM’s impact to every corner of Maharashtra and to other states across India. “Our mission is for every aspiring student who dreams of education and is willing to work hard to know that VSM is here to support them,” she shares.

In addition to geographic expansion, VSM is prioritizing vocational training to address diverse career paths. “Not all students may want to pursue academics, and we want to support those who are practically skilled,” Geeta explains. “Vocational training programs will help them become self-sufficient and contribute to their communities.”

As part of its commitment to continuous improvement, VSM has partnered with IIT Mumbai to conduct a detailed impact assessment. Geeta believes this initiative will provide valuable insights, enabling VSM to refine its model and better serve students, ultimately helping them realize their potential in building a stronger, more empowered nation.

A model built on community support

Through VSM, Geeta has built a support network for students, mentors, and alumni who collectively strive to uplift each other. “People often think they need a big network, funds, or a family legacy in social work to make a difference,” she reflects. “But I’m an ordinary person. All it took was a genuine desire to make a difference.”

She believes in the power of collective impact, emphasizing that even small contributions from individuals can create meaningful change. “If you can’t contribute financially, consider offering your skills, your time, or even just sharing our students’ stories with others,” she says. “Every effort counts.”

For Geeta, the mission of VSM is more than just supporting individual students—it’s about creating a lasting change that uplifts communities. With each successful alumnus, VSM reinforces its impact, proving that change is possible through dedication and community support.

This harsh encounter marked the birth of an idea. With a background in mechanical engineering from SGGS Institute of Engineering and Technology, Maharashtra, Ajinkya had always been drawn to solutions that blended practicality with social good. But this experience sharpened his focus on menstrual waste, a crisis that had long been overlooked in India.

“Most people don’t realize that every sanitary pad ever made still exists today,” he explains. “The plastic content and super-absorbent polymers (SAPs) take centuries to decompose. Multiply that by 12 billion pads thrown out each year in India alone, and the scale of the problem becomes clearer.”

A team driven by purpose

Determined to take action, Ajinkya built a team of like-minded young innovators. “It wasn’t easy,” he recalls. “We were driven by the belief that we could create a solution that addressed the issue from multiple angles: awareness, accessibility, disposal, and recycling.”

The journey from idea to innovation spanned three years of research and development. “We worked tirelessly, going through countless prototypes and testing phases,” he shares. “We wanted to develop not just any machine but a truly revolutionary one.” The initial PadCare X machines were smaller, designed to process a limited quantity of used sanitary pads, allowing the team to refine the technology with each iteration. Eventually, these early models paved the way for the full-scale PadCare X system, capable of processing up to 1.5 MT of used sanitary pads daily.

The science of transformation: Awareness to Recycling

PadCare Labs provides a comprehensive menstrual hygiene management service that focuses on four main pillars:

• Awareness: “We provide awareness programs around menstrual health and hygiene and work to break the taboo surrounding menstruation,” Ajinkya explains. These initiatives help communities understand the importance of safe menstrual practices and reduce stigma.

• Accessibility: To ensure that menstruators have access to necessary products, PadCare Labs installs the PadCare Vend, a dispensing machine that supplies sanitary pads in case of emergencies. “This adds an extra layer of security and convenience for women, especially in public and corporate spaces,” Ajinkya notes.

• Segregation: “We believe there should be no manual handling of sanitary pads,” Ajinkya states firmly. PadCare Labs ensures source segregation by installing specialized PadCare bins in women’s washrooms. These bins, equipped with odor-control technology, provide a safe and hygienic way to dispose of used pads. Trained teams regularly collect the waste and transport it to a centralized recycling facility.

• Recycling: At the heart of PadCare Labs’ operation is the PadCare X machine, which is capable of recycling soiled sanitary pads by extracting reusable raw materials such as wood pulp and plastic. “Once the pads are processed, the extracted materials are sent to different recyclers for further use,” Ajinkya shares. This unique recycling method reintegrates waste into the ecosystem, contributing to the circular economy.

One of the key aspects of PadCare Labs’ success lies in its business model. “We operate on a service-fee basis,” Ajinkya explains. “Organizations pay for the installation and maintenance of PadCare bins, with service fees charged per collection based on the number of bins and the collection frequency needed—whether weekly, biweekly, or monthly.”

At the core of this system is PadCare X, which uses a patented 5D technology to process sanitary napkins, converting them into reusable resources like pulp and plastic. This innovative technology not only reduces waste but also contributes to a circular economy by reintegrating processed materials back into the ecosystem. The PadCare VAP technology allows the bins to store pads without odor or bacterial growth for up to 30-35 days, offering clients flexibility while maintaining high hygiene standards.

In addition to service fees, PadCare Labs generates additional revenue by selling recycled products made from the processed sanitary pads. This circular model reinforces their commitment to sustainability and innovation.

The impact of PadCare Labs has not gone unnoticed. The startup garnered national attention through its appearance on Shark Tank India, where it secured funding and mentorship that accelerated its growth. “Being on Shark Tank was transformative,” Ajinkya says. “It not only provided financial backing but also validated our mission and brought more visibility to the issue of menstrual waste.”

Beyond Shark Tank, the startup has been honored with multiple awards, including the NASSCOM Social Innovation Forum 2019 and the Design Excellence Award 2021 (CII). Most recently, PadCare Labs was recognized by UNICEF’s "Innovation30" and featured in Forbes Under 30. “Every recognition reminds us that we’re on the right path, but it also highlights the responsibility we carry,” Ajinkya notes.

Impact by the numbers

The statistics alone are compelling. To date, PadCare Labs has served over 800,000 menstruators across 23 cities and conserved more than 249 metric tons of CO2 equivalent emissions by diverting sanitary waste from landfills. These numbers reflect not just environmental impact, but a shift in societal norms and practices around menstrual hygiene management.

Addressing challenges head-on

While PadCare Labs has achieved significant milestones, the journey has not been without obstacles. “Educating people and breaking taboos around menstruation is still a challenge,” Ajinkya admits. “Many organizations hesitate to adopt new solutions due to a lack of awareness or budget constraints.”

To tackle this, PadCare Labs places a strong emphasis on education and outreach. “We conduct workshops and awareness programs that not only educate menstruators but also involve stakeholders in discussions about the environmental and social benefits of sustainable MHM,” Ajinkya tells ImpactStories.in. The startup’s comprehensive approach, paired with its innovative solutions, works toward gradually changing mindsets.

Looking to the future

“Our vision is ambitious but necessary,” Ajinkya shares. “We want to scale up our recycling facilities beyond Pune to cities like Bangalore and Delhi, and eventually take this model global.” While PadCare Labs’ services are already available in multiple cities, expanding its recycling infrastructure will optimize transportation, increase efficiency, and support a robust network of recycling facilities across India.

The path forward includes partnerships with corporations looking to meet ESG goals and contribute to the circular economy. “We’re inviting organizations to join us in making a tangible impact,” he says, emphasizing how collective action can drive larger systemic change.

In 2016, Vedarth Deshpande, a digital marketer from Dhule, Maharashtra, made a life-changing decision. An Entrepreneur’s calling beyond Business
"Initially, my life was all about business," Vedarth shares with ImpactStories.in during our conversation in Pune. "I moved to Pune to grow my marketing company, but as I settled in, I felt an increasing urge to do something more meaningful. I grew up in a family where community service was a core value. My father always found ways to give back, and I wanted to do the same—but in a way that was personal and involved my own energy, not just financial contributions."

Vedarth’s entrepreneurial ventures, part of the Deshpee Group, include founding Socinova and Trigacy, which provide affordable marketing solutions to clients worldwide, as well as Floma, a platform simplifying interior design with technology, and a restaurant venture. His idea for Nelda wasn’t an overnight revelation but something that developed gradually. His approach to creating change was strategic, focusing on long-term sustainability rather than temporary solutions. "I didn’t want to just donate money to an NGO. I wanted to put my skills in organization and leadership to use, to create something that would last."

The birth of Nelda Foundation

The pivotal moment came in 2016 when Vedarth, along with his team, decided to form Nelda Foundation and adopt Hanuman Tekdi, a hill in Pune. This hill, located near Symbiosis College, was barren, rocky, and largely neglected by the community. But where others saw a desolate piece of land, Vedarth saw potential.

"Our vision was to transform the hill into an urban forest," Vedarth explains. "We didn’t just want to plant trees—we wanted to create an ecosystem and involve the community in the process. Environmental conservation isn’t just about trees; it’s about changing mindsets."

What started as a small project quickly grew. Vedarth and his team worked tirelessly to create a plan that would not only allow for the planting of trees but also ensure their survival. They partnered with local nurseries to procure native saplings and designed a system for irrigation, using water tanks and pipelines to sustain the plants through the dry months.

"Initially, it was tough," Vedarth admits. "We didn’t have much funding, and the terrain was difficult to work on. But we were committed, and slowly, we started seeing results."

Building a movement, one sapling at a time

Over the years, Nelda Foundation’s efforts began to gain momentum. Vedarth and his team focused on raising awareness about the importance of environmental sustainability, not just through tree planting, but by engaging with the local community. One of the key aspects of Nelda’s success has been its ability to mobilize volunteers.

"People are eager to help once they understand the impact they can have," Vedarth tells ImpactStories.in. "We started organizing weekly events where people could come and plant trees with us. Every Sunday morning, volunteers from all walks of life—students, families, professionals—joined us on the hill."

The volunteer movement has grown exponentially since Nelda’s inception. Over the past eight years, more than 12,000 volunteers have participated in the initiative, helping to plant over 7,000 trees. The success of the project isn’t just measured by the number of trees planted, though. Nelda’s tree survival rate is an impressive 80%, thanks to the careful planning and ongoing maintenance efforts led by Vedarth and his team.

Challenges along the way

While Nelda Foundation’s accomplishments are commendable, the journey has not been without its challenges. One of the biggest obstacles Vedarth faced early on was the terrain itself. The hill they chose to reforest is rocky and steep, with no easy access for transporting saplings and materials.

"We had to carry everything ourselves," Vedarth recalls. "There were no proper roads leading up to the site, so we had to physically haul the saplings, which weigh around 20-25 kilograms, up the hill. It was exhausting work, especially in the beginning when we didn’t have many volunteers."

Another challenge was funding. Since Nelda Foundation relies on donations to purchase saplings and maintain the site, securing consistent financial support has been a struggle at times. "We didn’t have a lot of resources initially," Vedarth shares. "But we made do with what we had. Over time, as people saw the impact we were making, more donors and organizations came forward to help."

Despite these hurdles, Vedarth’s determination never wavered. "Every challenge we faced only reinforced my belief that this work was necessary. It’s not easy, but nothing worthwhile ever is."

The power of small steps

When asked what he hopes people take away from Nelda’s work, Vedarth shared a simple but profound message:

"People often think they should work with an NGO only if they can make a significant impact, but that’s not true. If you can’t plant 100 trees, just plant one. If planting isn’t possible, support someone who is planting. And if you can’t contribute directly, simply spread the message of environmental awareness. Every small effort counts, and even the smallest step can help create a greener world. You don’t need to contribute big to make an impact—just think green in whatever way you can."

For Vedarth, environmental action isn’t about the scale of one’s contributions but the intention to make a difference, however small. It’s this mindset that has fueled Nelda Foundation’s growth and inspires people to join the cause, whether by planting trees, raising awareness, or supporting others’ efforts.

Vedarth and his team have harnessed the power of digital marketing to spread their message, using blogs, social media, and other online platforms to educate people about tree planting and sustainability practices.

"We realized that while we could physically plant trees, our true impact would come from changing how people think about the environment," Vedarth says. "Through our online efforts, we’ve reached over 10 million people. Our content teaches people how they can contribute to reforestation in their own communities, even if they can’t join us in Pune."

The digital aspect of Nelda’s work has been crucial in expanding the organization’s reach. Vedarth has even received inquiries from people across India who want to replicate Nelda’s efforts in their own regions. "We’ve had people from as far as Maharashtra and Gujarat asking how they can start similar projects. That’s the kind of impact we’re aiming for—creating a model that others can follow."

Looking ahead: the future of Nelda Foundation

As Nelda Foundation continues to grow, Vedarth has set his sights on even bigger goals. "We’ve planted over 7,000 trees, but that’s just the beginning," he says with a smile. "Our goal is to increase our efforts by 20% every year. We want to engage more volunteers, plant more trees, and ultimately, create a network of urban forests across Maharashtra."

One of Nelda’s long-term objectives is to collaborate with other NGOs and communities throughout India. Vedarth envisions a future where cities and towns across the country are dotted with urban forests, serving as green havens for both people and wildlife.

"We’ve learned so much over the past eight years, and now we want to share that knowledge with others," Vedarth tells ImpactStories.in. "It’s not just about what we can do here in Pune—it’s about creating a movement that inspires people everywhere."

“I didn’t expect to survive. But when I did, I knew it was time to change how we think about patient recovery,” Dr. Tejaswini Murthy shares with ImpactStories.in as she reflects on the turning point in her journey—one that transformed her from a critically ill patient into a global advocate for nutrition in critical care.

Raised in Bangalore, Dr. Tejaswini’s early fascination with medicine grew from an unlikely source: a sickly childhood. Constantly battling illness, she became acutely aware of the role that health and nutrition played in recovery. It was a realization that would come full circle years later, when her own health crisis sparked a life-altering mission.

A health crisis that changed everything

In 2016, Dr. Tejaswini and her husband embarked on a difficult fertility journey, trying for years to conceive through IVF treatments. After numerous failed attempts, an IVF procedure in Australia took a frightening turn. She was rushed to the ICU after developing a severe abdominal infection. The prognosis was dire: she had only a 50% chance of survival.

“I was terrified,” she recalls. “I remember calling my family, not knowing if I would make it.” Her abdomen filled with nearly two liters of pus, requiring two emergency surgeries and six blood transfusions. Despite these life-saving interventions, it wasn’t until her husband and friends began bringing her home-cooked food that her recovery truly began to accelerate.

“I realized then that while the medical interventions saved my life, it was nutrition that brought me back to full strength,” she tells. From that moment, Dr. Tejaswini knew her path forward would involve transforming ICU care by focusing on nutrition, an often-overlooked element in critical care recovery.

The drive to revolutionize ICU nutrition

After recovering from her near-fatal infection, Dr. Tejaswini shifted her focus from anesthesiology to nutrition, enrolling in a PhD program at the University of Adelaide. Her work aimed to fill a critical gap in ICU care: how proper nutrition can speed up recovery for critically ill patients. “In the ICU, we often overlook nutrition,” she explains. “But it’s crucial to survival. Our bodies need the right fuel to heal.”

Her research at the University of Adelaide would prove transformative. One of her landmark studies examined the nutritional intake of 4,000 ICU patients, revealing a direct correlation between poor nutrition and negative outcomes. Patients experiencing gastrointestinal issues like vomiting or diarrhea often went unnoticed in terms of nutrition support, significantly hampering their recovery.

This research was a breakthrough, shining a spotlight on an issue few ICU doctors had considered deeply. “Proper nutrition wasn’t just about survival—it was about improving quality of life after critical illness,” she says. Her findings not only received global recognition but also earned her a place in the prestigious "15 Stories" campaign celebrating impactful workin STEM by the University of Adelaide. She was also named a “Woman of Impact” for her significant contributions to healthcare.

Personal struggles: Battling through 28 IVF cycles

While her professional life soared, Dr. Tejaswini faced continued personal struggles. The path to motherhood was filled with heartache, marked by 28 failed IVF cycles over the course of four years. But even in the face of repeated disappointment, she refused to give up.

“There were moments when I thought I couldn’t handle another failure,” she tells ImpactStories.in, her voice soft with emotion. “But each time, I reminded myself to stay positive. I knew I had come too far to stop now.”

Her medical knowledge and deep understanding of nutrition kept her focused. She maintained a balanced lifestyle, adhering to a strict diet and managing her health through careful nutrition, which she credits with getting her through the most difficult periods of her life. Despite the strain on her body and the emotional toll, she continued her research, advocating for the importance of nutrition in critical care.

Finally, after years of trying, her resilience paid off. She successfully conceived through IVF, and in July of that year, she gave birth to a healthy daughter. “Becoming a mother after everything I had been through was surreal,” she shares with deep emotion. “I felt like my journey had come full circle. And I knew my focus on nutrition had helped me through it.”

Returning to India: Bridging the gap in ICU care

With her personal and professional goals now intertwined, Dr. Tejaswini returned to India with her family, determined to bring her expertise back home. “India’s ICU nutrition practices lag behind,” she explains. “Most guidelines are based on Western research, which doesn’t always account for our population’s unique needs.”

In India, conditions like diabetes and malnutrition are prevalent, making critical care even more complex. Dr. Tejaswini’s mission was clear: to drive a shift in ICU nutrition protocols by focusing on the needs of Indian patients. She began mentoring four ICU doctors across India—two in Chennai, one in Bangalore, and one in Gujarat—helping them implement nutrition-focused research and treatment protocols tailored to the Indian population.

“Many ICU doctors are unaware of how essential nutrition is in patient recovery,” she tells ImpactStories.in. “They may prescribe nutrition, but often the delivery is overlooked. My goal is to change that mindset.”

Despite the challenges of working in a healthcare system that is often under-resourced, Dr. Tejaswini remains optimistic. She and her husband, who pursued a master’s in biostatistics to support her research, are gathering data to make the case for better nutrition in critical care.

Current challenges

While Dr. Tejaswini’s work has already made waves, the challenges are far from over. In India, many ICUs are still focused primarily on life-saving interventions, with nutrition often taking a backseat. Despite her research showing that proper nutrition can drastically improve recovery outcomes, many hospitals struggle with implementation.

“There’s a gap in both knowledge and infrastructure,” she explains. “Doctors understand the importance of nutrition, but often don’t have the resources or training to ensure patients receive the necessary support. And in under-resourced hospitals, the delivery of care is inconsistent.”

One of her current projects is building a framework that hospitals can follow to help improve nutrition delivery across various ICU settings. Additionally, she is working on research that focuses specifically on the Indian diet, which can vary greatly from Western dietary guidelines. Customizing protocols to better suit Indian dietary needs will ensure more effective and culturally relevant care for critically ill patients.

A path forward with purpose and hope

“When I lost both my adoptive parents by the age of 16, my world was shattered,” Vinayak narrates to ImpactStories.in. His father passed away due to old age, and his mother lost her battle with cancer. "It was devastating, but I had no time to grieve. I had to find ways to survive."

In his teenage years, Vinayak took up various low-paying jobs to support himself. He sold lottery tickets in the local market and worked as a waiter in a hotel. Despite these hardships, Vinayak completed his education up to the 10th grade. “It was tough," he recalls, "but I couldn’t let my circumstances dictate my future."

The weight of responsibility: Early marriage and fatherhood

Vinayak’s challenges didn’t end with the loss of his parents. At the age of 16, he got married, and by the time he turned 21, he was already the father of three children—two sons and one daughter. “It was overwhelming,” he shares. “I had to grow up fast. Supporting my family while struggling with my own survival was incredibly tough.”

Despite the heavy responsibilities of early marriage and fatherhood, Vinayak remained focused on rising above his circumstances. He worked various odd jobs, from selling lottery tickets to waiting tables, all while providing for his young family. His determination not only helped him survive but also fueled his desire to create a better future for others. Today, Vinayak’s children have grown up to pursue successful careers, and he continues to focus on his mission of educating underprivileged children.

A life-altering diagnosis: The turning point

At the age of 27, Vinayak’s life took a dramatic turn when he was diagnosed with a serious heart condition. “The doctor told me that one of my heart valves wasn’t functioning properly, and I needed surgery,” he shares. The surgery, however, came with a hefty price tag of ₹1.75 lakh, an amount Vinayak simply didn’t have.

“Faced with the choice of battling my own health or doing something bigger for society, I decided to dedicate my life to helping others,” Vinayak says with determination. His decision to forgo surgery set him on a completely new path—one where service to others became his driving force.

The first step in his journey was raising funds for a young boy named Tushar, who suffered from a severe heart condition. "Tushar needed ₹1.2 lakh for surgery, and his mother came to me seeking help," Vinayak recounts. Even while grappling with his own health issues, he decided to raise money for Tushar. In three months, Vinayak collected ₹1.22 lakh through small donations from local communities, and the boy successfully underwent surgery. “That moment changed my life forever,” he says with a smile.

Inspired by this experience, Vinayak realized the potential to help many more people facing similar struggles. On January 18, 2002, he founded Jeevan Mitra Pratishthan Charitable Trust to provide financial support to needy cardiac, cancer, and renal patients. The trust was inaugurated at the hands of Hon. Shri Anna Hazare and Hon. Shri Balasaheb Bharde (a renowned Gandhian), in the presence of Hon. Jackie Shroff and Hon. Dr. K. B. Grant.

Since its inception, Jeevan Mitra Pratishthan has supported more than 1,500 patients, providing them with critical financial aid for life-saving surgeries and treatments. “This was my way of giving back,” Vinayak tells ImpactStories.in. "Helping Tushar made me realize that there are so many people in need of support, and I wanted to make a bigger impact."

The birth of Mahatma Gandhi School

After witnessing the impact he could have on others, Vinayak realized the transformative power of social work. His journey took a pivotal turn when Dr. Diksha Barve, a well-wisher, gifted him a copy of Mahatma Gandhi’s autobiography, The Story of My Experiments with Truth. Deeply moved by Gandhi’s values of service, non-violence, and education, Vinayak felt a renewed sense of purpose. “It changed the way I saw my mission in life,” he tells ImpactStories.in. This inspiration fueled his decision to start a school that would provide what he never had—a quality education, free of cost, for underprivileged children.

On June 14, 2014, Mahatma Gandhi School was born, becoming Maharashtra’s first and only free English-medium school for disadvantaged children. The school was inaugurated by Hon. Dr. Vikas Baba Amte and aimed to uplift the children of widows, divorcees, prisoners, ailing parents, and sex workers. Located in Pune’s slum areas, the school started with just a handful of students but grew quickly as its mission spread.

“We started from scratch, with no government support,” Vinayak explains. “Everything—books, uniforms, shoes, stationery, transportation, midday meals—was provided for free, entirely funded by donations.”

Over the years, Mahatma Gandhi School has grown to educate 525 children from various marginalized communities. "We believe that every child, no matter their background, deserves the opportunity to dream and achieve those dreams," Vinayak says proudly.

Understanding the true value of Education

His vision for Mahatma Gandhi School wasn’t just about academics, but about shaping well-rounded individuals. “We assess the value of education the same way we assess the value of land or the stock market,” Vinayak says. “But we rarely think about the improvement of character and values.”

A school built on community support

The success of Mahatma Gandhi School rests on the shoulders of community donations and local support. “When I started, I went door to door, collecting funds,” Vinayak recalls. “People would give ₹5, ₹11, or sometimes ₹51. The highest donation I received in those days was ₹51.”

Vinayak's personal story and genuine dedication attracted attention from some notable figures. In 2014, Bollywood actor Jackie Shroff came to Pune for the school’s inauguration, lending his support to the cause. “I had no contacts or connections in Mumbai,” Vinayak shares. “I simply approached Jackie Shroff’s residence, and to my surprise, he agreed to attend. His presence at our opening ceremony was a huge moment for us.”

Challenges along the way

While Mahatma Gandhi School has grown, it has not been without challenges. “Our biggest struggle is sustaining monthly expenses,” Vinayak says. “We need ₹18-20 lakh per month to cover operational costs, including paying our 35-member teaching and support staff.”

The school operates on 4,000 square feet of land, but space is limited. “We don’t have a playground for the children, which is something we desperately need,” Vinayak adds. "Additionally, we aim to hire more qualified teachers, but paying them fair salaries is a challenge without stable funding."

The absence of consistent government support means that the school relies heavily on donations from individuals. “We need people who believe in our mission to come forward and sponsor students or help with operational costs,” Vinayak urges.

Looking ahead: Dreams of expansion

Vinayak’s vision for Mahatma Gandhi School doesn’t stop at primary education. “Right now, we educate children up to the 9th standard, and next year will be our first 10th-grade graduating batch,” he shares excitedly. “But what happens after 10th? College education is essential, and it’s expensive.”

Vinayak dreams of expanding the school to provide college education, ensuring that his students don't fall through the cracks after completing secondary school. “If we stop at the 10th grade, many of these kids will be forced into low-paying jobs, like becoming plumbers or electricians. While those are respectable jobs, I want these children to have the opportunity to become doctors, engineers, or whatever they aspire to be.”

The power of one: Vinayak’s personal sacrifices

Vinayak's journey is not just about providing education; it’s about embodying the change he wants to see in society. "I’ve sacrificed a lot, but it’s all worth it when I see these kids thrive," he says. Over the years, Vinayak has turned down numerous opportunities for personal financial gain. “I don’t believe in accumulating wealth," he shares with ImpactStories.in. "My only asset is this school and the future of these children."

Vinayak’s personal battle with his heart condition continues, but he remains undeterred. "It’s been over two decades since my diagnosis, and I haven’t had surgery," he says, attributing his survival to the blessings of the community and the joy of his work. “I don’t take any medication, but every time a child succeeds, it feels like I’ve been given more time.”

With a background in management and training under the esteemed U.S Nobel laureate and founder of The Climate Reality Project, Mr. Al Gore, Shivam has devoted his life to creating impactful solutions that address pressing environmental challenges.

Early Life and Awakening to Environmental Challenges

‍Born and raised in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Shivam Singh grew up in a place where water was abundant, and the idea of water scarcity seemed distant and irrelevant. However, this perception changed dramatically when he moved to Pune in 2012 for his graduation. In Pune, Shivam encountered the harsh reality of water scarcity for the first time—communities receiving water only once every few days—a stark contrast to his childhood experience. This eye-opening experience deeply impacted him.

During his time at Symbiosis University, Shivam participated in a college project competition on rainwater harvesting, where he led his team to victory. This project was a pivotal moment for Shivam, fueling his passion for sustainability and setting him on a path that would soon become his life's mission. The experience was further enriched by his selection for climate reality training in 2015 under U.S. Nobel Laureate Al Gore in Delhi, solidifying his commitment to environmental advocacy.

A Defining Moment: The Nagpur Train Incident‍

In 2015, Shivam had another transformative experience that further deepened his commitment to sustainability. While traveling by train through Nagpur, he witnessed a distressing scene: the train made multiple unscheduled stops because desperate villagers pulled the emergency chain to access water, as they had no other source to rely on. This moment was a powerful reminder of the severity of India’s water crisis and ignited a deeper sense of urgency in him to find sustainable solutions.

From Awareness to Action: The Birth of a Mission‍

Inspired by his college project and the Nagpur train incident, Shivam initially focused on raising awareness about sustainability. He conducted sessions at over 200 institutions, including corporates, schools, and colleges, educating people on the importance of sustainable practices. However, Shivam quickly realized that awareness alone was not enough. Many institutions lacked the expertise to implement sustainable solutions effectively, and without proper guidance, their commitments often fell short.

Recognizing this gap, Shivam shifted his approach from merely raising awareness to providing actionable solutions. By 2017, he had transitioned into the role of a research consultant, laying the groundwork for his future endeavors. He launched his consultancy firm, ExploreiT, which offered in-depth research and consultancy services to help corporations and communities tackle sustainability challenges. Subsequently, he introduced ExploreiT Nextgen Solutions, a branch focused on delivering comprehensive sustainable solutions across five key areas: Air, Water, Waste, Energy, and Biodiversity. This initiative was designed not only to raise awareness but also to execute tangible projects addressing pressing environmental issues, thus bringing his vision full circle.

Under the mentorship of Colonel Shashikant Dalvi, a retired army colonel known for his contributions to over 100 villages in Beed, Shivam began implementing rainwater harvesting systems in regions severely affected by water scarcity, such as Beed and the outskirts of Pune. These efforts began in 2018, and by 2021, Shivam's team had successfully implemented rainwater harvesting systems in 105 villages, making them tanker-free. This significant achievement earned his team a letter of appreciation from the Jilla Panchayat CEO and an invitation to Mantralaya to discuss their work with the Chief Minister of Maharashtra.

Innovative Solutions and Unconventional Approaches

Shivam's work has been characterized by innovative approaches that go beyond traditional sustainability practices. One such initiative involved partnering with Yerwada Jail in Pune for a tree plantation project. Corporates often struggle with sustaining tree plantations due to challenges in maintenance and location selection. To address this, Shivam proposed utilizing the 200-300 acres of land available within Yerwada Jail for tree plantation. The Deputy Commissioner supported the idea, and with the help of jail inmates, Shivam's team planted सोनचाफा (Sonchafa), a popular and costly flower famous in state of Maharashtra. The inmates, who received a day off their sentence for each day they worked on the project, ensured that the trees were well-maintained. The project was a resounding success, with the first flowers blooming in March 2022. Encouraged by this success, Shivam replicated the model in other locations, eventually planting 386,000 trees with a survival rate of over 90%.

Another significant project that Shivam spearheaded was the 'Bring Back Butterflies' initiative, aimed at creating hospitable environments for butterflies in urban areas. The project, which began in Pune, quickly gained traction as butterflies started returning to these areas. The success of this initiative led to its expansion to other cities like Noida, Nagpur, and Hyderabad, with butterfly gardens being established in various locations, including Joggers Park in Viman Nagar, Air Force stations, and Symbiosis College, among others.

Overcoming Challenges and Shifting Perceptions

Shivam’s journey has not been without challenges. One of the biggest hurdles he faced was the lack of social capital and career opportunities in the sustainability sector in India. When Shivam first informed his parents about his decision to start a business in sustainability, they were concerned about the viability of such a career. The prevailing perception was that sustainability was not a profitable or secure field.

Another challenge was the age bias Shivam encountered. Being younger than most experts in the field, Shivam constantly had to prove his credentials as a subject matter expert. The expectation that authority in sustainability comes only with age was a barrier he had to overcome. However, through perseverance and consistent efforts, Shivam has now become a well-recognized figure in the field, even training under Mr. Al Gore for a second time in 2021.

Shivam’s ability to engage people of all ages in his work has been a key factor in his success. He has collaborated with senior citizen forums and other groups, broadening the reach of his initiatives and gaining valuable contributions from unexpected quarters.

Impact in Numbers: The Quantifiable Success of a Vision

Shivam’s efforts have resulted in tangible, quantifiable impacts that speak volumes about the effectiveness of his initiatives. Over the years, his projects have mobilized an impressive 300,000 interns and volunteers on the ground. Through cleanliness drives alone, Shivam's teams have removed 96,000 kilograms of waste annually—a significant achievement in the fight against environmental degradation.

In addition to waste management, Shivam’s projects have beautified over 40 walls in Pune and established 56 butterfly gardens. The tree plantation project has seen 386,000 trees planted with a survival rate exceeding 90%, while the rainwater harvesting initiatives have made 105 villages tanker-free, providing a sustainable water supply to these communities. Each year, Shivam trains up to 18,000 students, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to contribute to sustainability.

Recognition and Social Transformation story

Shivam's work has not gone unnoticed. In 2021, he was recognized by the famous Earth Day non profit U.S. based organization as one of their “50 Youth Voices from Asia.” The same year, Climate Reality organization featured him as one of five Climate Warriors worldwide. His contributions have also been acknowledged by the Maharashtra government, which awarded him the Paryavaran Doop award for his efforts in the field of climate change. In 2022, UNICEF recognized Shivam as one of the leading youth voices in India.

Beyond awards and accolades, Shivam’s work has had profound social implications. In one of the villages where his team implemented rainwater harvesting, the project’s success led to a remarkable social change. A local woman approached Shivam and shared a heartfelt story that moved him deeply. She told him that because of the reliable water supply brought about by the rainwater harvesting system, families in the village had started marrying off their daughters there—a practice that had been avoided for years due to the severe water crisis. This unexpected but deeply impactful outcome underscores how sustainable solutions can transform not just the environment but also the social fabric of communities, restoring hope and dignity where it had been lost.

Vision for the Future: Building a Sustainable Movement

Looking ahead, Shivam envisions a future where more people enter the sustainability sector, not just for social impact but also for financial stability. He believes that as more corporations and individuals take on projects that contribute to a greener society, a broader movement can be built that makes a real difference.

Shivam is particularly focused on nurturing the next generation of changemakers and leaders who can align their career goals with societal impact. His message is clear:

At the age of 12, Adhunika Prakash experienced something that would shape her future. As her father battled cancer, an NGO visited their home to offer medical supplies, but what struck her most was when the volunteers asked how she was feeling. That simple act of emotional support planted a seed in Adhunika’s mind—to someday make a meaningful impact on others.

In 2013, while pregnant with her first child and living far from home, Adhunika faced the challenges of breastfeeding in isolation. Desperate for guidance, she found comfort in an Irish online breastfeeding group. Through the virtual community of mothers, she realized how transformative such support could be. This sparked an idea: if an online community could help her, why couldn’t something similar work for Indian mothers facing the same struggles?

Motivated by this realization, Adhunika launched a small Facebook group for mothers in Pune. A Childhood Lesson in Compassion

At 12 years old, Adhunika Prakash encountered a moment that would unknowingly set the course of her life. Her father was battling cancer, and an NGO visited their home to provide essential medical supplies. But for Adhunika, what stood out wasn’t the physical help—they asked her how she was feeling, a question no one had asked her in the midst of the family’s turmoil. “That moment left a mark on me because it made me realize how important it is to care about how people are coping emotionally,” she recalls. It was then that she decided she wanted to work for an NGO and make a difference in people’s lives.

From Personal Struggles to a Global Movement

Years later, this desire would resurface in 2013, when Adhunika found herself navigating the complexities of breastfeeding while living abroad, far from family and friends. Pregnant with her first child, she had committed to breastfeeding, understanding its vital role in boosting a child’s immunity. However, the reality turned out to be far more challenging than she had imagined.

Adhunika recalls to ImpactStories.in, "I had health issues growing up, so when I became pregnant, I wanted to make sure my baby had the best chance of staying healthy. I committed to breastfeeding for two years, but I found it incredibly hard and isolating". Living in a foreign country without a support system, she felt overwhelmed, with no close family or friends to guide her through the difficulties of breastfeeding.

Desperate for help, she joined an Irish online breastfeeding group. It was here, amidst virtual conversations with mothers from around the world, that Adhunika found the support she needed. "Even though I was physically alone, this online community made me feel understood and supported. I realized that mothers in India must be going through the same challenges, but many might not have access to this kind of support," she shares.

This realization sparked a transformative idea: What if she could create a similar network for Indian mothers?

The Birth of BSIM: Building a Lifeline for Indian Mothers

Returning to India, Adhunika couldn’t shake the thought of how much an online community could help Indian mothers, who often faced not only the practical challenges of breastfeeding but also societal pressure to introduce formula early. With this in mind, she launched Breastfeeding Support for Indian Mothers (BSIM) as a modest Facebook group for mothers in Pune, initially expecting only a small local community.

But the group quickly took on a life of its own. Word spread, and more mothers joined, bringing their friends and family into the fold. The stories shared by these mothers mirrored Adhunika’s own experiences—feelings of isolation, uncertainty, and the overwhelming challenges of breastfeeding in a society often quick to offer formula as the solution.

"It was all very organic," Adhunika explains. "Women from all over joined because they saw value in having a safe, non-judgmental space to share their experiences and seek guidance." What started as a local support group quickly became a thriving global community.

Battling Misinformation and Cultural Pressures

In India, one of the most significant challenges new mothers face is the cultural and familial pressure to introduce formula. "There’s a lot of misinformation, even from well-meaning family members and sometimes healthcare professionals. Many mothers are made to believe that formula is a quick fix, even when it’s not necessary," says Adhunika. This not only undermines mothers’ confidence but also leads to decisions that may not align with their initial breastfeeding goals.

BSIM’s mission evolved: provide emotional support while dispelling myths and delivering accurate breastfeeding information. To reach more mothers, BSIM expanded its offerings and launched a website with 65 key breastfeeding FAQs translated into 10 Indian languages, ensuring that essential knowledge was accessible to all.

"Information is empowerment," Adhunika emphasizes. "We wanted mothers, regardless of their background or location, to have the facts they needed to make informed decisions."

Scaling Up: A Global Community with a Personal Touch

As the group continued to grow, managing the increasing volume of queries became a challenge. At first, Adhunika handled everything herself, but as BSIM expanded, she realized she needed support. Today, BSIM is powered by a team of volunteers—breastfeeding mothers who have walked the same path and are eager to support others.

These volunteers offer round-the-clock support within the Facebook group, responding to queries and providing guidance at all hours. This online community has been a lifeline for mothers facing urgent challenges, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

One case that stands out involved a baby whose mother tragically passed away from COVID. The baby couldn’t tolerate formula, and it seemed like a hopeless situation—until BSIM stepped in. Mothers from the community came together to donate breast milk, ensuring the baby was fed exclusively breast milk for the first six months of life. "It’s moments like these that remind us why this work is so important," Adhunika says with emotion.

A Movement Recognized: Awards and Accolades

BSIM’s impact has not gone unnoticed. In 2018, Facebook recognized BSIM as one of the top five global communities—and the only one from Asia—providing the group with financial support and global visibility. "That recognition was a huge milestone for us," Adhunika notes.

In 2019, Adhunika received further recognition, winning the WebWonderWoman award from the Ministry of Women and Child Development, and the Outlook Poshan award from the then Vice President of India, Venkaiah Naidu.

But for Adhunika, the accolades are secondary to the real impact. "The real reward is hearing from mothers who’ve been able to breastfeed because of the support they received. That’s what keeps us going."

‍Expanding Her Reach: The Book ‘Breast Potion’

In addition to her work with BSIM, Adhunika authored Breast Potion, a book that simplifies breastfeeding knowledge for new and expecting mothers. Designed to be easy to understand, Breast Potion has become an international bestseller on Amazon. "The goal was to create a resource that’s accessible and helps mothers feel prepared before their baby arrives," Adhunika explains.

This book continues to play a critical role in spreading awareness and offering practical guidance to mothers across the world.

‍Looking Forward: Changing Attitudes, Changing Lives

Even with its immense growth, BSIM’s mission remains the same: ensuring every mother who wants to breastfeed has the support she needs. Adhunika has seen gradual shifts in attitudes. "More families and healthcare professionals are becoming aware of the benefits of breastfeeding, but there’s still a lot of work to be done."

The biggest hurdle? The cultural and familial pressures. "We still see too many cases where mothers are advised to introduce formula, not because it’s needed, but because of outdated beliefs or misinformation," she explains. But she remains hopeful. "Slowly, we’re helping to change that."

In 1998, a moment of compassion sparked a movement. Dr. Sucheta Dhamane and her husband, Dr. Rajendra Dhamane, were on their way to work when they encountered a mentally ill woman sitting on a pile of garbage, desperately hungry and neglected. Moved by her plight, they began preparing and distributing meals daily, but they soon realized that food alone wasn’t enough. These women needed safety, care, and a place to call home.

Determined to make a difference, the couple founded Mauli Seva Pratishthan. What began with providing food quickly grew into something much larger. Another encounter, this time with a young woman who had been sleeping on a road divider for safety, was a stark reminder of how vulnerable these women were. With no one to turn to and no place to stay, the exposed divider, despite the dangers, felt like the safest option. This wasn’t an isolated case. The more they worked, the more they uncovered heartbreaking stories of women—some highly educated—now abandoned due to mental illness or social stigma.

Realizing that sporadic help wasn’t enough, the Dhamanes dedicated themselves full-time to building Mauli Seva Pratishthan—a place where women and their children could not only survive but thrive. Today, Mauli is a lifeline for 475 women and 40 children, providing them with safety, care, and empowerment through self-sustaining projects like organic farming, baking, and dairy.

In 1998, Dr. Sucheta and Dr. Rajendra Dhamane embarked on a journey that would change the lives of hundreds of women and children. The turning point came during a seemingly ordinary day when the couple encountered a mentally ill woman sitting amidst garbage, neglected and starving. “We were both on our way to work when we saw her,” Dr. Sucheta recalls in an interview with ImpactStories.in. “She was sitting near a drainage area, completely disheveled, without any clothes, and she was eating her own waste. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.”

The sight haunted them. As doctors, they had witnessed human suffering before, but this level of abandonment was shocking. The woman was so hungry that she had resorted to eating what little was around her, and she was drinking drainage water to survive. "She was in such a desperate state," Dr. Sucheta explains, "her mind was so broken that she didn’t even recognize the danger of her situation." They tried to give her food, but she couldn’t eat properly—it had been too long since she had consumed anything nutritious.

Even after they left to fulfill their professional duties, the memory of that woman stayed with them. "I couldn't focus at work," Dr. Sucheta says. "We both felt like we had to do something, but we didn’t know what." That evening, they began their mission, preparing meals and driving around the streets to distribute them. This initiative, called the Annapurna Project, became a daily commitment. “Every day, before heading to work, we packed 40-50 meals and distributed them to people in need,” Dr. Rajendra shares. But as time passed, they realized food was only a temporary fix for a much deeper problem.

The Beginning of Mauli Seva Pratishthan

The couple’s growing involvement with homeless women reached another turning point when they met a young woman who had been living on the streets for days. She had nothing and was completely alone when they found her. "She told us she always slept on a road divider because it was the only place she felt safe," Dr. Sucheta recounts. The idea that a road divider—exposed to traffic and the elements—felt safer than any other option hit them hard. "That’s when it clicked—we couldn’t just feed these women. They needed a home, protection, and care."

This incident, combined with the heartbreaking scene they had witnessed earlier, solidified their decision to do more. Soon after, the couple received 6,000 square feet of land from Dr. Rajendra’s father, and Mauli Seva Pratishthan (MSP) was born. The organization grew from the idea that these women, many of whom were mentally ill and abandoned, deserved lifelong care.

Akka: The First Resident of Mauli Seva Pratishthan

One of the earliest and most poignant cases at Mauli Seva Pratishthan was Akka, an elderly woman who had been sitting at the Nagar-Pune Highway chowk for over four years. No matter the weather—scorching heat or monsoons—Akka never left her spot.

Determined to give Akka the care she deserved, Drs. Sucheta and Rajendra Dhamane decided she would become the first resident of Mauli Seva Pratishthan. One day, during the monsoon, they went to bring her to the shelter, but Akka refused. After several attempts, they finally managed to convince her to come to Mauli.

When they asked her why she had stayed at the chowk for so long, they learned her heartbreaking story. Years ago, her mother and brother had abandoned her there. Her brother had asked her to sit at that spot, saying he would bring her tea, but he never returned. Akka remained at the chowk for four years, believing that if she left, her brother would never find her again.

Akka lived at Mauli for several years, but her years on the streets had taken a severe toll on her health. One night, she became critically ill. Despite rushing her to the hospital, they were turned away, and by the time they returned, Akka had passed away. Her death was a painful moment, but it strengthened the Dhamanes' resolve to ensure that no other woman would die alone and uncared for on the streets.

A Lifelong Mission

Mauli Seva Pratishthan isn’t just a shelter—it’s a place where women can reclaim their dignity and rebuild their lives. Over the years, the Dhamanes have introduced numerous self-sustaining projects, including organic farming, goat farming, dairy, and a bakery, to help these women regain a sense of self-reliance.

"Mauli is not a temporary shelter," Dr. Rajendra explains. "It is a lifelong care, treatment, and rehabilitation home for destitute, homeless, mentally and physically ill women, and their children—many of whom were born as a result of rapes on the streets. Here, both women and their children can rebuild their lives with dignity, hope, and purpose."

In addition to providing essential care, Mauli helps its residents and their children thrive. One girl, the child of an abandoned and homeless woman who is also at Mauli, is now studying physiotherapy, while another, with a similar story, recently gained admission into a B.Sc. Nursing program. These success stories reflect Mauli’s larger mission—not just to house people, but to empower them to build meaningful futures.

Challenges and Growth

Starting Mauli came with its own set of challenges. In its early days, MSP struggled to gain trust. People misunderstood their mission, spreading rumors and questioning their motives. “Some even thought we were taking mentally unstable women to remove their kidneys,” Dr. Rajendra recalls. Despite the skepticism, the Dhamanes pushed forward. "We received critical support from community members like Bapat Kaka and Sane Kaka, who provided early financial contributions that allowed Mauli to grow."

In 2015, Mauli expanded its efforts with the Mangaav project, a 3-acre facility gifted by renowned Natya Kalakar like Abaji, Balbhim, and Meghmala Tai Pathare. This facility, named Mangaav, is dedicated to supporting individuals who have lost both their minds (mann) and homes (gaav). The development of this center allowed Mauli to reach even more women in need, ensuring their work would continue for years to come.

Reflecting on Mauli’s journey, Dr. Sucheta expresses her deep gratitude for the countless individuals who have helped the organization achieve so many milestones. “There are so many people who have supported us along the way, far too many to name. I am completely indebted to all of them for their help and support in this journey.”

International Impact and Recognition

Mauli Seva Pratishthan’s incredible contributions have not gone unnoticed. In 2016, the organization was honored with The One International Humanitarian Award by Rotary in Hong Kong, recognizing its outstanding work in empowering marginalized women and children.

Additionally, through a connection made by SBI chairman Arundhati Bhattacharya, Mauli was introduced to a team of neuroscientist women in Switzerland. This collaboration focuses on pioneering mental health research, particularly in studying gender differences in treatment, with the goal of preventing mental health issues before they fully manifest.

Looking Forward

As Mauli Seva Pratishthan moves into the future, the challenges remain significant, particularly in securing regular funding. The organization’s monthly expenses total ₹20 lakhs, with no government or institutional support. Despite the financial strain, the Dhamanes remain committed to their vision—expanding their mental health research lab and establishing a 300-bed charitable hospital to provide surgeries for the poorest of the poor.

“Mauli is more than a home,” Dr. Sucheta says. “It’s a promise that no woman will be left on the streets to suffer, that every child will have a future, and that we can build a better, kinder world together.”

Sathya Natarajan’s story is not one of sudden inspiration but a tapestry woven from years of dedication, community spirit, and an unyielding commitment to positive change. Known as an "Environment Foot Soldier", Sathya’s journey began not with a grand revelation but through the simple acts of service modeled by those around him. “Volunteering has always been a natural extension of my life. It's not just about a singular event, but a gradual immersion where giving back became second nature.” Sathya shares with ImpactStories.in.

Born and brought up in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Sathya was influenced early on by his grandmother, who embodied the spirit of "seva" (selfless service). Acts of sharing and helping were everyday occurrences in his family, laying the foundation for Sathya’s lifelong commitment to volunteering. His first taste of organized volunteer work came during his school years when he participated in a campaign to raise funds to repair a damaged school shed. As a sixth-grader, Sathya and his classmates were tasked with collecting donations—whether in cash or in kind, such as bricks—from the local community. They would go door to door, knocking on each one, never knowing what to expect.

Some residents greeted them warmly, offering coffee or milk, while others pretended not to be home, even switching off their lights to avoid interaction. Then there were those who, despite not having money, offered bricks instead, trusting the young students and treating them with respect. This experience, filled with a variety of human interactions, taught Sathya invaluable lessons about community engagement, perseverance, and the different ways people contribute to a cause. It was a pivotal moment that deepened his understanding of collective effort and reinforced his dedication to volunteering.

Building a Volunteering Portfolio

As Sathya’s life progressed, so did his involvement in various social causes. His professional life in Pune, where he worked night shifts, provided him with ample time during the day to volunteer. Over the last 17 years, Sathya has participated in nearly 10,000 volunteering events, collaborating with more than 60 NGOs across a broad spectrum of causes. From working on issues related to expectant mothers and nutrition to COVID-19 relief, Sathya’s volunteer work spans what he describes as "cradle to grave".

A significant part of Sathya’s focus has been on environmental issues. His dedication to this cause has led him to engage in numerous initiatives, including reducing carbon emissions and participating in government projects. One of his most notable contributions is the simplification of the Maharashtra Urban Tree Preservation and Protection Act of 1975. Sathya created a "Single Page Tree Act" to make the legislation more accessible to the public. His advocacy in this area has empowered countless citizens to protect trees in their communities, training officials and commissioners in Pune and establishing himself as a key figure in urban tree preservation.

In addition to his work on tree preservation, Sathya has also spearheaded the Red Dot Campaign, which focuses on the dignified disposal of menstrual waste. This initiative has not only addressed waste segregation but has also highlighted the dignity of labor for waste collectors. The campaign has significantly changed public perceptions and practices regarding menstrual waste disposal, furthering Sathya’s commitment to both environmental and social issues.

Significant Projects and Initiatives

Sathya’s involvement extends to several noteworthy projects. He played a crucial role in the Swachh Survekshan initiative, a competition among 1,800 cities to measure cleanliness. As a ‘Survekshan Ambassador’, Sathya’s responsibilities included implementing solutions, measuring their effectiveness, and ensuring they met citizens' needs. His work in this project significantly contributed to urban cleanliness and community engagement.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Sathya was actively involved in managing 12 crematoriums and distributing 36,000 food packets to those in need. These efforts, which included setting up helplines and participating in national disaster relief operations, demonstrated his ability to mobilize resources and coordinate large-scale operations during a crisis.

Throughout his years of volunteering, Sathya’s work has inspired many others to take up causes of their own. One of the most remarkable stories is of a young woman who attended one of Sathya’s sessions during her college years. Motivated by his dedication, she went on to lead six community petitions, taking issues all the way to the High Court and Supreme Court. Her journey from a student volunteer to a leader in community activism is a testament to the impact of Sathya’s work.

Another success story stemming from Sathya's efforts is the implementation of the "Citizen to Tree Ratio 1:8" concept, which led to Project 8. A leader, inspired by Sathya’s sessions, initiated a tree plantation project at Yerwada Jail, where more than 1,000 trees were planted. This not only provided environmental benefits but also offered a meaningful and rehabilitative activity for the inmates. By focusing on spaces where trees wouldn’t easily be cut down, this initiative aligned with Sathya’s broader vision of community involvement and ensured that the trees would be both valued and protected by the inmates.

Recognition and Impact

Sathya’s extensive work has not gone unnoticed. He has won the "Finalist Hero Volunteer" Award, recognized for his overall volunteering efforts across different causes. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Sathya was also honored with the "Best Humanitarian Award" from the Global Mental Health Association for his work in organizing camps and providing essential support during the crisis. Additionally, Dettol India recognized Sathya’s contributions during the pandemic through their #DettolSalutes campaign, even printing his photo on their handwash bottles to highlight his efforts.

However, Sathya views these awards not as personal achievements but as recognition of the collective efforts of the communities he has worked with. For him, the true reward lies in the impact of his work—the trees saved, the waste management practices changed, and the new leaders inspired.

In 2001, a heart-wrenching moment in a village near Pandharpur changed everything for Mangaltai Shah and her daughter, Dimple Ghadge. Two young girls, both HIV+, were found abandoned in a pile of garbage. Their parents had died from AIDS, and the village, gripped by fear and stigma, discarded them like refuse. No one would touch them. Shocked and deeply moved, Mangaltai and Dimple tried to find a care facility that would take the girls in but were met with rejection after rejection. The stigma around HIV meant no institution would accept them.

Refusing to give up, Mangaltai and Dimple brought the girls into their home, realizing that there must be many more children facing the same fate. This act of compassion led to the creation of Palawi, a rehabilitation center under the NGO Prabha-Hira Pratisthan, in the village of Takli near Pandharpur. What started as a personal mission quickly grew into a sanctuary for HIV+ children and marginalized women, the elderly, and mentally unstable individuals.

Today, Palawi cares for nearly 250 people, including 150 HIV+ children. It offers more than just basic needs—shelter, food, and education—but also medical care and skill-building opportunities, helping residents become self-reliant. Many children who were once expected to live short lives are now reaching adulthood, defying the odds and stigma. Through its unwavering dedication, Palawi is not only saving lives but giving these children and others a future full of hope and possibilities.

In a quiet corner of small village Takli near Pandharpur, Maharashtra, Palawi, a rehabilitation center, offers a vital refuge for those society often overlooks. Founded by Mangaltai Shah and her daughter Dimple Ghadge under the Prabha-Hira Pratisthan NGO, Palawi’s story is one of resilience, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to uplift the most vulnerable.

“My mother, Mangaltai, has been working in this field for nearly 50 years” Dimple shares with ImpactStories.in. “I remember accompanying her as a child, visiting orphanages and leprosy colonies, feeding the hungry, and caring for the sick. It was a natural transition for me to continue this work.”

The Birth of Palawi

In 1998, the HIV epidemic was rapidly spreading across rural Maharashtra, bringing with it fear, stigma, and the abandonment of children and adults. It was during this turbulent time that Mangaltai Shah and her daughter, Dimple Ghadge, found themselves at a crossroads that would change their lives forever. One day, they received a call to visit a village in Pandharpur, Maharashtra, where two young HIV-positive children had been abandoned. The sight was heart-wrenching: the two little girls, aged just 2.5 and 1.5 years, were left on a pile of roadside garbage—one crying, the other motionless. Their parents had died of AIDS, and their relatives, gripped by fear and stigma, had discarded them in a cow shed, believing they brought 'shame' to the family and could infect others simply by their presence.

Moved by their plight, Mangaltai tried to persuade the villagers to care for the girls, but no one would take them in. The pervasive fear of HIV had led to a cruel rejection, not just by the villagers, but by society at large. Undeterred, Mangaltai and Dimple decided to bring the girls home, providing them with the first meal and a bath they had received in days. When they tried to find an orphanage or care home that would accept the HIV-positive children, they were met with closed doors. Not a single institution in Solapur district—or even across Maharashtra—was willing to take them in.

This experience became a turning point for the Ghadge family. They realized the dire need for a safe haven for these children, who were rejected even by orphanages due to their HIV status. And thus, Project Palawi under the NGO Prabha-Hira Pratisthan was born in 2001, starting as a modest shelter but growing into a sanctuary for hundreds of HIV+ children and women over the years.

Challenges and Resilience

Starting Palawi was not without its challenges. The stigma surrounding HIV was, and still is, a significant hurdle. “People would avoid us, whisper behind our backs, and even stopped inviting us to social events,” Dimple recalls. “They questioned why we would waste money on children they believed wouldn’t survive long.”

Despite these social obstacles, Palawi pressed on, driven by the belief that every life is valuable. In 2004, a breakthrough came when an article by Pradhyapak Pravin Dawane brought widespread attention to their work. This recognition led to increased support and allowed Palawi to expand, securing a 400 sq ft space to house a few more children.

Self-Reliance as a Lifeline

Central to Palawi’s mission is the concept of स्वावलंबन (Swawlambhi)—self-reliance. “We teach our children the importance of independence,” Dimple explains. “Every child participates in school activities, learning skills like making paper crafts, shopping bags, and quilts. This not only gives them a sense of purpose but also helps them earn their own pocket money.”

This focus on self-reliance extends beyond the children. Palawi has trained 750 women in various skills, providing them with sewing machines or farm jobs to ensure they too can stand on their own feet.

A Broader Impact

Palawi’s impact goes beyond just shelter and care. They have facilitated 26 marriages between HIV+ individuals, and thanks to proper medical care and awareness, nine couples have had HIV-negative children. “This is a significant milestone,” Dimple notes, “because it shows that with the right care and knowledge, HIV positive individuals can lead full lives and even have healthy families.”

Additionally, Palawi has taken on the responsibility of caring for elderly and mentally unstable individuals abandoned by their families, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Their work now encompasses not just HIV+ care but also rehabilitation for those who have been discarded by society.

Success Stories

Among the many lives transformed at Palawi is that of Prerna (name changed to hide the identity), who came to Palawi as a frail, HIV+ 5-year-old. Through years of care, she not only survived but thrived, earning a role as Palawi’s Chief of Administration at just 25 years old.
Aparajita (name changed to hide the identity) is another success story—a mentally unstable woman who was rescued from the streets after being raped and left to fend for herself. Four years later, she is now stable and living a dignified life at Palawi.

Ongoing Challenges

Despite their successes, Palawi continues to face significant challenges. “Our biggest need right now is space,” Dimple says. “We can currently shelter 250 people, but there are many more out there who need help. We need a new hall that can house at least 1000 more children, but it will cost around ₹20 lakhs.”

The stigma against HIV+ individuals also remains a barrier, with many children denied entry into schools and even basic medical treatment. “One of our girls needs a root canal, but no dentist is willing to treat her because of her HIV status,” Dimple reveals. She suggests that increasing awareness about how HIV spreads and fostering the inclusion of HIV+ individuals as integral members of society are crucial steps in dismantling this stigma.

Palawi, under Prabha-Hira Pratisthan, illustrates what can be accomplished through unwavering kindness and determination. Starting from humble beginnings, it has now transformed the lives of over 1,000 HIV+ children till date and continues to empower women and marginalized groups through self-reliance. Despite facing significant challenges, including societal stigma and financial constraints, Palawi’s work has had a profound impact, offering hope and a future to those who had been written off by society.

As news of his dedication spread, local farmers began bringing their old and abandoned cattle to him, prompting his small effort to grow.

Despite facing challenges such as limited space and resources, Bhausaheb’s commitment never wavered. With the support of his community and guidance from Jain Muni Shri Acharya Vidhyasagarji, he formalized his mission into Vidhyapranmya Paryawaran wa Gosanwardhan Gaushala in 2021. Today, the Gaushala provides a safe haven for over 230 cattle, many rescued from dangerous situations.

The Gaushala has been making a profound difference in the lives of these cattle, offering them a second chance and ensuring their well-being in a compassionate environment.

In the heart of Vadner, Maharashtra, the story of ‘Vidhyapranmya Paryawaran wa Gosanwardhan Gaushala’ is a powerful example of what compassion and unwavering dedication can achieve. Founded by Bhausaheb Vilas Tambile, this sanctuary has become a lifeline for cows and bulls that would otherwise face a grim fate.

Bhausaheb’s journey began long before the official formation of the gaushala. With a diploma in computer science, he initially worked in Pune, but his heart was always tethered to his family’s farming roots. "Our family has always been animal carers and lovers," he shares with ImpactStories.in. This intrinsic bond with animals and the encouragement from his father ignited his passion to return to his roots and dedicate himself to animal welfare.

Challenges and Growth‍

Starting with just 5-10 cows on their own land, the family's compassion became known in their community. As more people began leaving their cattle with them, the numbers grew. By 2016, they were caring for over 45 cows and bulls. "I decided to go full-time into taking care of these innocent lives," Bhausaheb says, reflecting on his decision to leave his job and fully commit to the cause.

The transition to a registered NGO - ‘विद्याप्रणम्य पर्यावरण एवं गोसंवर्धन गौशाला’, under the guidance of Jain muni Shri Acharya Vidhyasagarji, marked a significant turning point. However, this journey was fraught with challenges. “Once we had around 50 cattle, it became a challenge to have them in our place due to shortage of space,” Bhausaheb recalls. Basic infrastructure was lacking, and the process of registering an NGO was a daunting task.

Their dedication soon attracted more animals, often those rescued from butchers or illegal trafficking. “We had to face a lot of corruption and received threats dealing with government officials,” Bhausaheb recounts. The sudden influx of animals strained their resources, leading to severe shortages of fodder, water, and manpower. Yet, the kindness of nearby residents who pitched in to help made a significant difference.

Living in a dry region with no nearby water bodies added another layer of difficulty. The family had to make multiple trips daily, covering 5 kilometers to fetch water in a 1000-liter tank. Despite these hardships, their resolve remained unshaken.

Impact of the Gaushala

The impact of Bhausaheb’s work is profound. “We have rescued and saved more than 630 cows,” Bhausaheb proudly shares with ImpactStories.in. Currently, they care for over 230 cattle, and more than 400 cows have been donated to farmers in need. The community’s perception has shifted dramatically. “People initially thought we were making profits, but now they understand our genuine commitment to animal care,” he explains.

Their efforts have also garnered recognition, though specific awards were not mentioned. One of the gaushala’s significant achievements is fostering a culture where people now take better care of their cattle instead of sending them to butchers.

‍However, the journey is far from over. The primary challenge remains securing enough fodder to feed the cattle daily. "Our region is dry and infertile," explains Bhausaheb. "We can’t rely on grazing, so we buy about two tons of green fodder daily, which costs around 8,000 rupees—amounting to a monthly expense of about 2.5 lakh rupees." Bhausaheb calls for support in any form, particularly in donations for fodder.

Fueled by this understanding, Amrapali decided to transform her own suffering into a force for change. She started teaching a small group of children who lived on the streets, providing them with hope through education. What began as a modest effort soon blossomed into six "footpath shalas" — schools on the sidewalks of Pune. In 2022, Amrapali formalized her work through the Savali Social Foundation, which now empowers children and entire communities, lifting them from the margins of society.

A special woman means that despite not being born a woman, by fighting with nature, with family, with society, and sometimes with myself, I am a woman made through struggles.”)

Growing up in a society that stigmatized her transgender identity, Amrapali often found herself isolated. “My childhood was filled with loneliness and hardship,” she shares with ImpactStories.in. “I remember watching other children enjoy milk and chocolates while I went hungry, relying on leftovers from other homes.”

Early Life and Challenges

Amrapali’s journey took a dramatic turn when her father passed away while she was in the fourth grade. Left with her mother and two sisters, they found themselves in dire straits. "My father’s death left us in a precarious situation. My mother had to shoulder all responsibilities, both at home and financially," she recounts. Despite this, Amrapali’s spirit remained unbroken. Her mother’s struggles were immense, but they became a source of inspiration for Amrapali.

At school, she was often ostracized because of her transgender identity. "I realized if I have to change the situation, I will need to get educated," she reflects. Her path was fraught with challenges, but Amrapali’s determination saw her through high school. The obstacles included not only the lack of financial resources but also the emotional toll of enduring societal scorn. Amrapali worked at a dog shelter to earn ₹500, which she used to pay her 10th-grade board exam fees. Her hard work paid off as she passed her exams with commendable marks.

Overcoming Workplace Discrimination

After school, Amrapali took on a job as a tele-caller. Initially, it seemed like a solution to her financial woes, providing ₹3,500 a month. However, workplace discrimination became a new challenge. "I thought this mentality was only present in slums, but I was wrong," she says. During a train journey from Pune to Bandipur with her colleagues, a hurtful comment about her transgender identity made her realize that prejudice was pervasive, even among educated individuals. This revelation led her to quit her job, falling into a deep depression that culminated in two suicide attempts. "Life is never meant to be easy, but it's what you make out of it that counts." quotes Amrapali.

"एखाद्या स्त्रीचा परत जन्म होतो जेव्हा ती आई बनते. माझ्यामध्ये जी आई होती, तिचा पण जन्म झाला.," Amrapali quotes. "A woman is reborn when she becomes a mother. The mother within me was also born." For Amrapali, this rebirth was not about biological motherhood but about embracing her role as a caregiver and advocate for those whom society had forgotten. Her journey was not just about overcoming personal adversity but about transforming her pain into purpose.

The Birth of Amrapali and Savali Social Foundation

In the midst of her struggle, Amrapali found solace in the idea of giving back. Nine years ago, she began her work, officially registering the Savali Social Foundation in 2022. Her vision was clear: “For kids who beg on traffic signals, education is the only solution”. The foundation started with running six footpath schools, aiming to provide these children with the education they desperately needed. By paying the school fees for 137 students, the foundation has kept them from dropping out, offering them a glimmer of hope for a brighter future.

Her transformation into "Sapta-rangi aai" symbolizes her role as a mother figure to many in the community. This nickname, meaning "Mother of Seven Colors," reflects her vibrant and inclusive approach to social work.

Empowering the Marginalized

Amrapali’s impact goes beyond just education. Her foundation has been instrumental in helping 196 individuals start small businesses like tea stalls, snack centers, and fruit and vegetable stalls. This initiative has empowered many to become self-sufficient. "Right to live as human, don’t treat me special. Normal life is what I expect," she asserts.

Her efforts also include conducting menstrual hygiene sessions and sanitary pad drives for women living on footpaths. These initiatives aim to address basic health and hygiene needs, which are often neglected in marginalized communities. Additionally, Amrapali has sponsored the education of children of prostitutes, providing them with opportunities they would otherwise lack.

Her foundation’s daily milk distribution program ensures that no child in slums goes without milk—a basic necessity that she herself was deprived of as a child. The program distributes 50 liters of milk daily to children in need, ensuring that they receive proper nutrition.

Despite the accolades and recognition, including more than 350 awards such as Zee 24 Taas Ananya Gaurav Saman and Adarsh Mata 2023, Amrapali faces significant challenges. Her current needs include ₹64,000 for basic infrastructure improvements, ₹35,000 for wiring, and ₹23,000 for painting, with a total of ₹2.5 lakhs required for overall enhancements, including a new computer setup for the community center. These challenges are significant, but Amrapali remains determined to overcome them.

Amrapali’s vision extends beyond immediate relief. She dreams of establishing community centers for education and medical treatment. "I want to help people come out of poverty, begging, and also help them with basic needs," she states. Her immediate goal is to improve her existing community center to better serve those in need. This vision reflects her commitment to creating lasting change and improving the lives of those around her.

Forced to leave their home in the middle of the night, Suvarna and Arun moved to a temporary location with 12-13 dogs. But the community’s compassion shone through when few kind-hearted individuals helped them establish a makeshift shelter, allowing them to care for over 150 dogs.

The Pasare family's journey wasn't easy, but their love for animals kept them going. Over time, the NGO officially registered in 2016, and the number of animals they cared for grew exponentially. Suvarna's expertise in naturopathy became invaluable, especially in treating dogs with cancer and paralysis, helping them live longer and more comfortable lives.

Arun, who had experience in pharmacy, played a crucial role in administering the right medicines, while their son Mayur, also an animal lover, joined the cause. Together, they have created a sanctuary where animals receive not just care but also affection and dignity in their final days.

The NGO’s impact is not limited to rescue and rehabilitation. They have also made significant strides in controlling the stray dog population in areas like Bhavdhan and Bhosale Nagar in Pune. These areas once saw a rise in stray dog incidents, leading to cases of poisoning and killings. The NGO's intervention has not only saved countless dogs but also made the neighborhoods safer.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, when the world came to a standstill, Suvarna and her team continued their work. They rescued 100 dogs left abandoned as their owners were isolated or had passed away. "While the rest of the country was closed, we made sure these dogs were taken care of" Suvarna recalls with ImpactStories.in. Some dogs were returned to their owners post-pandemic, while others remain in the shelter, their owners having succumbed to the virus.

Their tireless efforts were recognized in 2021 by the Indo-UK Cultural Forum, an honor that acknowledged the significant impact the NGO has made in animal welfare. Despite this recognition, the challenges they face remain daunting.

The NGO currently operates out of a rented space that houses over 500 animals. However, their lease is ending soon, and they must find a new location—a daunting task given the number of animals they care for. "Relocating is stressful for the animals," Suvarna says. "We need at least one acre of land to build a permanent facility, including a 24-hour hospital for animals."

Funding is another pressing issue. Despite being CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) approved for three years, they have yet to receive support from corporate companies. The costs of surgeries and daily care for such a large number of animals are immense, and donations are crucial for their survival. "There are times when we can only afford to feed the dogs once a day" Suvarna admits. The cost of surgeries can range from 25,000 to 2.5 lakh rupees, adding to their financial burden.

Looking ahead, Suvarna's vision for the NGO is clear: to establish a 24-hour hospital dedicated to animals in a permanent location where they can provide even more comprehensive care. Despite the challenges, she remains hopeful that with continued support, they can achieve this goal and expand their impact.
